The Cadet team from Bexhill Sailing Club retained the Youth Federation Trophy with a closely fought battle with Newhaven & Seaford SC at Piddinghoe Lake.
Strong winds and surf at Hastings and Bexhill meant a rapid change of venue, and 12 Bexhill sailors trooped across to inland water to defend their honour. Sailors raced in a round-robin series of 8 races with gusts to force 5, numerous capsizes, gear failures and groundings on submerged mud-banks. Most sailors endured bruises and poundings as the wind shifts produced challenges in the extreme, but smiles and shaken bodies survived with the final result hinging on a protest at the leeward mark in the “Race of Champions” decider.
Race officer Brookes hastily convened a protest committee and the decision was unanimous – an amazing total of equal points for both teams after 72 positions were calculated.
In true sportsmanship fashion, the teams decided to share the trophy for 6 months each with both teams appearing on the role of honours.
Bexhill’s senior youth team travel to Queen Mary’s Resevoir, Weybridge in 2 week’s as the season culminates in the2 day RYA Regional Championships. Results and reports to follow.
